David Villa undergoes medical ahead of New York City move
The striker's departure from Atlético Madrid will be confirmed on Monday. 'El Guaje' will be joined at the US outfit by Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.
Atlético Madrid’s David Villa has undergone a medical with New York City FC ahead of a transfer to the US outfit.
Villa’s physical examination took place at theBridgewater Hospital in Moss Side, Manchester, where he was joined by Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard. The pair are set to become the first two European stars to sign for the Major League Soccer franchise.
The Spain striker’s departure from Atlético will be confirmed on Monday, ending a one-year stay at the club during which he has won a league winners’ medal and scored 15 goals in all competitions (13 in La Liga, one in the Copa del Rey and one in the Supercopa de España).
‘El Guaje’ has signed a three-year contract with New York City, a club founded in 2013 by Manchester City and baseball side the New York Yankees. The new franchise, who under director of football Claudio Reyna are putting the finishing touches to their first signings, will begin competing in the MLS in March 2015.
Villa must now decide what he will do until New York City's pre-season kicks off early next year. Reports in the British media insist that the 32-year-old, who could face around six months without a club to train or play for, will definitely not be involved at Man City.
